What do brown bears eat in general?

Brown bear Rocco

In wilderness, bears mainly eat roots, berries, occasionally leaves, buds and grass which means everything the vegetation provides. Of course, they also eat some meat. Bears are 80% vegetarians and 20% carnivores. With the beginning of late summer, they start eating fish. Of course, they also eat a lot of nuts in the wild.

Bears are omnivores. Vegetables are the main component of the feed in our sanctuary. Lettuce, celery, fennel and carrots are among the vegetables we feed to our bears. Boiled potatoes are often the main food in summer. Our bears are also fed nuts. Two to three times a week, we also feed meat because it is part of a balanced diet for brown bears. However, no animal has to die for our bears. Our bears are fed exclusively with fallen game or fish remains.

How do the bears at the sanctuary show that they are hungry?

Brown bear Balou

The bears are foraging more, moving around a lot in their enclosures and making themselves a bit more noticeable when our animal caretakers pass by.

Brown bears usually find the widest range of ripe fruits and nuts in autumn. That is the time when they start to build up enough fat reserves to go into hibernation.

Why do the brown bears in our sanctuary eat so many nuts in autumn?

Brown bear Rocco

We can give the bears the fat they need to become tubby and ready for hibernation when we feed lots of nuts. The nuts don't grab the teeth, but they are very good fat stores.

Why do the bears in our sanctuary like pumpkin enrichments?

The pumpkins are often filled with grapes, honey and nuts. We sometimes get food donations that include sweet fruits. Although bears love sweet fruits, we only feed them in very small quantities because fruits contain a lot of sugar that can cause tooth decay and tartar.

The bears in our sanctuary are also fed dog food pellets in autumn.

Well done. We feed dog food pellets as well  in addition to the vegetables as scatter feed. It is very easy to distribute in the enclosures. The bears have to use their sense of smell to find it. This increases the time the bears have to spend searching for food and keeps them busy for longer.

Brown bears hunt in packs in autumn to meet the increasing demand for food.

Correct answer. Bears are solitary animals and never hunt together in a pack.

What do brown bears eat first when they wake up from hibernation in spring?

Brown bear Balou

The bears' diet varies during the year.  In late autumn and winter, they go into hibernation and do not eat at all. In spring, they wake up and then their entire digestive system has to get activated again. That's why we let the bears graze in the spring, which means we generally don't feed them for almost a month. They are allowed to eat pasture that their digestion gets used to eating food again.
